philosophy

Philosophy really intrigues me; however, my professor is a horrible excuse of an educator. Did you know "when a tree falls down in the forest, and no ones there to hear it, does it make a sound?" is actually a philosophy riddle? Well it is- and the answer is no. George Berkeley (UC Berkeley was named after him; although, it's pronounced differently due to the change of American English) "made" (I couldn't think of a different word, sorry) this riddle. He was an Irish philosopher, quite possibly my new favorite- besides Epicurus because of my tatt. ANYWAY, the riddle is derived from his esse est percipi (to be is to be percieved). Meaning, things can only be percieved by the mind percieving them. The riddle is no because if you didn't see it then how do you know it exists? Like a peach, you know it exists because you see it, eat it, feel it, and smell it. I really like how other philosophers like Locke and Hume argue that how can things only exist if you see it. They asked if integers are infinite and most don't even know the numbers exist then how do we know it exists? As well as, if we close our eyes, do we suddenly disappear? Berkeley rebutts against their arguments by saying, that God has seen these numbers and sees us;therefore, the integers and we can exist. A lot of philosophers argue about higher power but I like that Berkeley incorporates this.
